At its core, the program tackles one of the most persistent challenges in criminal justice: recidivism. By providing hands-on training in optical care—fitting eyeglasses, interpreting prescriptions, and assisting patients—the program replaces uncertainty with opportunity.
Participants begin their training while still incarcerated, in optical labs inside correctional facilities which are outfitted with industry-standard equipment, allowing trainees to practice crafting lenses and frames with precision. They also receive coursework in customer service, healthcare ethics, and basic business operations—ensuring they are prepared not just for a job, but for a career.
The choice of opticianry is intentional. Vision care is a growing field with consistent demand, offering stable wages and opportunities for advancement. Graduates are connected with partner organizations, independent optical shops, and national retailers willing to hire trained candidates. Licensing support, resume coaching, and mentorship ensure that individuals don’t just complete the program—they successfully transition into the workforce.
